External Hard Drive. An external hard drive is a piece of peripheral equipment for a computer, it is basically a hard drive that is connected to the computer as an accessory. Many people use external hard drives if the hard drive in their computer is not large enough to hold enough information. Buying an external hard drive allows a person to store more information, in effect, avoiding the need to buy a new computer. Upgrading the hard drive is usually less expensive than upgrading the entire computer. External hard drives also make it possible to transfer large amounts of information from one computer to another.

External Sound Card. An external sound card is a piece of peripheral equipment for a computer that allows the computer to make recordings and to play music, when connected to a pair of loudspeakers. Many computers already have sound cards installed in them, but these 'internal' sound cards are usually only capable of making monaural recordings. If you want to make a stereo recording, you have to get an external sound card. Most external sound cards are connected to the computer by a USB connection.
