IBM. IBM is an abbreviation that stands for International Business Machines. IBM is a major computer company, and although their market share is diminished nowadays, in the 1950's and 1960's IBM had a near-monopoly on the manufacture of computers in the U.S.A. IBM started by making 'business machines', which included mechanical adding machines, and mechanical calculators, they also made typewriters. In the 1970's the IMB Selectric typewriter was well-known. In the 1950's IBM began to move from making cash registers and adding machines into making computers, and IBM became one of the largest computer companies in the world.
